Title: Sweet Evil
Author: Wendy Higgins Position in Series: First in the Sweet Evil Trilogy
Review: What. A. Book. When
I first started reading this, I was a little sceptical. The storyline
follows a group of young Nephilim (the descendants of angels and fallen
angels, known as demons in this book), something that has been repeated a
few times in various books. Now, one of my all time favourite series
was based around fallen angels and nephilim, so I was sceptical. Despite
this, I was captivated by this book only a few pages in, and I
completed the entire 400-some pages in record time, barely putting the
book down for more than 10 minutes at a time. Once finished, I promptly
hopped onto my computer to order the sequel, for good measure. The book
takes groups of characters (nephilim, angels and demons) and weaves
something beautiful, and something I’ve never seen done before. The
story world is so different from the other fallen angel/nephilim books
I’ve read before that I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. The
story itself is based around a group of six nephilim, the main
characters Anna and Kaiden, and their friends Kopano, Blake, Ginger and
Marna. Anna is the focus of the story, whose viewpoint you follow
throughout the book. Anna is half angel, half demon, daughter of the
demon of substance abuse, leaving her with an unnatural pull
towards drugs and alcohol, though she doesn’t know this at the beginning
of the book. To begin with, she just thinks she’s a freak of some sort,
with her super-enhanced senses and her ability to see and feel people’s
emotions. Of course, when she meets uber-sexy, son of the demon of lust,
drummer extraordinaire, Kaiden, she soon finds out she’s not quite
human. And to top it all off, she’s falling quickly and madly in love
with Kaiden. The problem? He’s a player (afterall, as the son of a lust
demon, his job is to seduce women...regularly), and relationships
between the nephilim are forbidden by their demon ancestors. And though
Anna thinks she might be breaking down Kaiden’s shell, they still risk
being killed if discovered. Not good. And making matters even worse, the
demons are getting suspicious, and if Anna and her friends can’t prove
they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing (mainly corrupting
humans), the demons will be more than happy to make an example of them.
Unfortunately for Anna, she’s half angel of light, and being evil just
isn’t in her nature. Luckily, her demon father is on hand to help.
Though his definition of help is questionable, at best. Anna’s also got
her two human best friends, Jay and Veronica, who can help keep her
spirits up...while she’s not pushing them away to protect them from the
demons. Who knew having a social life could be so difficult? This
book is such an incredible read, filled with love and betrayal, death
and sadness. You can’t help but fall in love (or loath) with the
characters. Except maybe Ginger, who can be a bit of a bitch. The story
is fast paced and will leave your heart pounding, terrified and
heartbroken for the characters you love. It’ll leave you screaming at
the bad guys and hungry for more, more than ready to see Anna and
Kaiden’s comeback for the hardships done to them. I absolutely can’t
wait to see what Wendy Higgins has up her sleeve for Sweet Peril, the
second book in this series! Rating: 9/10 Definitely a book to look out for at your local bookstores!
