Title: Nocturne
Author: Syrie James
Position in Series: Stand alone
Review:
Nocturne by
Syrie James is at heart a romance novel, with a twist. The main character,
Nicole, finds herself in a car accident during a snow storm, miles away from
civilisation. Luckily, handsome and mysterious Michael sees the accident
happen, and comes to the rescue. Unfortunately, with the roads blocked, Nicole
has no choice but to stay with her mysterious rescuer for four days, much to
Michael’s initial dismay. Though the chemistry between them is clear.
Over the
four days, Nicole and Michael get to know each other, slowly falling in love
with each other, though both are still keeping secrets. When Nicole
accidentally discovers Michael’s secret, things take a turn for the worse.
Michael’s a vampire. Luckily, the two characters manage to patch things
together, and fall even deeper in love.
The novel
is ultimately well written and captivating, though a little predictable at
times. The world is enchanting, even though the characters are stuck in the
middle of nowhere, and they’re the only two characters in the entire book. It
works, though.
My only
serious criticism with this book is the ending, which left me more than a
little frustrated. After four days, lots
of romantic scenes, Nicole and Michael are completely, truly in love with each
other...and they leave each other. This kind of ruined the whole book for me,
since it made the entire book feel a little pointless. I would much rather have
seen them live happily ever after (though I understand why they didn’t...vampire,
remember).
Despite
this, it was a good read, and I enjoyed everything but the ending. The
chemistry between the characters was to die for (not literally) and the story
world beautiful and enchanting. If you like romance, this is definitely worth
checking out.
