Review ~ Marked by P.C and Kristin Cast

Title: Marked

Author: P.C and Kristin Cast

Position in Series: First in the House of Night series. 11 books. Yep, 11.

Review:

This is another series I’m not going to do a full review of, I’m afraid. There are just too many books and I don’t even own the complete series yet, and I don’t want to give away too many spoilers. But I will say it’s a darn good series, especially considering it’s so long.

Anyway, the first book, Marked, is very much about setting the scene and introducing the characters you’ll come to love after 11 books. There’s very little action, except towards the very end, but it works. Here, you’re just meeting everyone and learning that the main characters have got a serious journey ahead of them (so keep on reading).

As for the characters themselves, we have main character Zoey Redbird, who’s just been Marked as a Vampyre, meaning she has to move to the House of Night to complete the Change. There, she meets her group of friends, which includes: her roommate Stevie Rae; the rather crazy twins Erin and Shaunee; and gay vocab extraordinaire Damien. Together, they are a truly great group, funny and loveable and you can’t help but love them. They stand by Zoey through the beginning of this difficult journey. There’s also the love interests: Zoey’s ex-boyfriend and human Heath, who’s determined they’re still together; and hottest fledging at the House of Night, Erik Night, who’s everything Zoey wants. No good book is complete without the love triangle. (Or love square in later books.)

In this first book, Zoey is fighting against the influence of the Dark Daughters, an exclusive club run by the not-so-nice Aphrodite and her human-hating friends. On behalf of Nyx, goddess and personification of Night, Zoey is determined to take over the Dark Daughters and set their mistakes right. It’s just not as easy as she wishes it would be.

Not the most exciting book of the series, as it is very much about setting the scene, but still a nice start to a very good series. Definitely recommended.
