Title: Everneath
Author: Brodi Ashton
Position in Series: First in the Everneath
trilogy
Review:
I was a
little bit unsure whether or not I wanted to read this straight after reading
Abandon by Meg Cabot, because the stories sounded so similar, but I needn’t
have worried. The idea behind the book was similar, but the way in which it was
done made it a completely different experience, so different you’d barely
notice the two books were based off the same myth.
The story
follows Nikki Beckett, a troubled teenager who was enticed into the underworld
(or the Everneath, as it is called in this book) by a charming immortal, Cole.
After one hundred years in the Everneath, Nikki Returns to the Surface for six
months to say her goodbyes. Though things aren’t quite as easy as she though
they would be.
Cole is
convinced that Nikki is something special, and is determined to take her back
to the Everneath to become an immortal like him, so that she can be his queen
and they can rule the Everneath together. Unfortunately for him, this is the
last thing Nikki wants. She’s in love with a human boy, Jack, who is the reason
she survived the Everneath and the main reason she returned. The Everneath
wants her back, but she’ll do anything to stay on the Surface to be with Jack.
This book
is a little slow to get started, and it takes a while to learn about all the
events that lead up to Nikki being taken to the Everneath, but by the end, I
was flicking pages furiously. With the six month deadline before the Everneath
takes Nikki back, which is counted down through the chapters, things get more
and more tense toward the end, leaving your heart racing toward the climax.
My one main
criticism, and it’s not really a criticism, is the relationships between Nikki
and Jack and Cole. I found it really hard to decide who I wanted Nikki to end
up with, so I wasn’t quite sure who to root for. She obviously cares more about
Jack, but the bad boys are always more fun. Despite my initial uncertainty, I
did end up rooting for Nikki and Jack, but a part of me is looking forward to
the next book, where it seems I might see a little more from Nikki and Cole.
All in all,
it was a good read. A little back and forth at the beginning where we kept
getting given flashbacks, but very fast paced by the end. The story was
different and interesting, with some mystery and romance thrown in for good
measure.
