Title: Abandon
Author: Meg Cabot
Position in Series: First in the Abandon trilogy
Review:
Where to
start with this one? I bought this book purely because it sounded different and
interesting, and it was certainly different. The story follows seventeen year
old Pierce Oliviera, starting a year and a half after she died. It took me a
little longer than usual to get into this book, simply because of where it
starts. You get thrust into the book a year and a half after a series of
significant events in her life, which are mentioned briefly, but aren’t
explained fully for quite a few chapters, which I found to be overly confusing
and a little hard to follow.
Once
everything was explained, however, I started to really get into the story,
though the pace was a little slow in places. Despite this, it was a good read.
You can’t help but feel sorry for Pierce, who’s life hasn’t been the same since
she died, and who keeps finding herself in dangerous situations, only to be
saved by the tall, dark and handsome...and extremely scary...John Hayden, the
boy she met while she was dead. And the boy who wants nothing more than to take
her back to the place of her nightmares: the Underworld.
Unfortunately
for Pierce, having the mysterious John Hayden love her is more dangerous than
anything she’s faced yet. The Furies hate John, and they’ll do anything to make
sure he’s hurt. And the easiest way to hurt him? To kill Pierce.
This was a
nice read, and being a fairly short book it didn’t take too long to finish. I’m
interested to see what happens next, and if you’re looking for a pleasant
afternoon read that’s got a bit of everything – romance, mystery, danger – this
is a book I’d recommend.
